Webcam not working? How to test and fix it

A webcam that won't turn on is almost always blocked, busy or physically covered. Test it first, then work through the fixes in order — most take under a minute.

Open Webcam Test

1. Test the webcam

Open the webcam test and press Start. If you see yourself, the camera works and the issue is in the app you're using — jump to step 5. If it fails, the test shows the error your browser reports, which points straight to the cause.

2. Check for a shutter or camera key

  • Many laptops have a sliding privacy shutter above the screen — slide it open.
  • Some keyboards have a camera on/off key, often an F-key with a camera icon. Press it and try again.
  • A black picture while the camera light is on usually means a shutter or cover.

3. Allow camera access

  • Browser: click the icon to the left of the address bar → Camera → Allow, then reload.
  • Windows 11: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. Turn on Camera access, Let apps access your camera, and Let desktop apps access your camera.
  • macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. Enable your browser or call app, then restart it.
  • iPhone and iPad: Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.

4. Free the camera and reconnect it

  • Close other apps that may be holding the camera — Zoom, Teams, OBS, virtual camera apps and other browser tabs.
  • Plug USB webcams directly into the computer instead of a hub, or try another port.
  • Windows: in Device Manager, open Cameras (or Imaging devices), make sure the webcam isn't disabled, and update the driver if it shows a warning.
  • Restart the computer to release a camera stuck in use by a crashed app.

5. Select the camera in your call app

  • Zoom: Settings → Video → Camera.
  • Microsoft Teams: Settings → Devices → Camera.
  • Google Meet: More options (⋮) → Settings → Video → Camera.
  • With more than one camera (say, a laptop camera and a USB webcam), make sure the right one is selected.
