How to reduce an image's size in KB

Application forms reject photos by file size, not by how they look. Here's how to hit an exact KB limit — and keep the image as sharp as possible — without installing anything.

Open Reduce Image Size in KB

Steps

  • Open the image size reducer and drop your photo (JPG, PNG or WebP).
  • Enter the maximum size the form allows, or tap a preset like 20KB, 50KB or 100KB.
  • If the form also has a minimum (for example 20–50KB), enter that too.
  • Check the result card — it shows the exact size in KB and in bytes.
  • Download the file and upload it to the form.

Why a quality slider doesn't work for forms

A quality slider changes file size unpredictably: the same 70% setting can give 40KB for one photo and 400KB for another. Working backwards from the limit is faster — the tool tries quality levels automatically, keeps the best one that fits, and only shrinks the dimensions when quality alone isn't enough.

What fits in each size

Figures are approximate for JPG photos at good quality. Simple images such as signatures or text documents compress much better and can stay larger.

TargetTypical photo size that fitsCommon use
20KB~250–350 px on the long sideSignatures, small ID photos
50KB~400–600 pxExam and job application photos
100KB~700–900 pxID proofs, certificates, profile photos
200KB~1000–1300 pxVisa photos, legible document scans
500KB~1600–2000 pxWebsite uploads, listings
1MB~2000–2500 pxHigh-resolution uploads

Tips for sharper results

  • Crop first — cutting away background around a face or document leaves more of the budget for what matters.
  • Use JPG for photos. PNG is lossless, so it can't be tuned to an exact size.
  • Results stay under the stricter limit (1 KB = 1,000 bytes), so they also pass portals that count 1,024 bytes per KB.
  • Keep the original and compress a fresh copy for each different limit.
