How to add page numbers to a PDF
You don't need Acrobat to number a PDF. Here's how to add page numbers in any style, skip a cover page, and keep numbers on the outer edge for double-sided printing.
Steps
- Open the PDF page numbering tool and drop your PDF.
- Pick a position — bottom center is the most common for reports.
- Choose a format: 1, Page 1, or Page 1 of N.
- Check size, font and margin in the live preview, flipping through a few pages.
- Click Add numbers & download.
Skipping the cover page
Choose Skip first page to leave the cover unnumbered. The next page then shows 1 — set Start numbering at to 2 if it should match the physical page. For documents with a title page and contents, use a range such as 3-40 to start numbering at the first chapter.
Numbering for double-sided printing
Printed books put page numbers on the outer edge: the right side on odd pages and the left side on even pages. Pick bottom-right and turn on Mirror on even pages to get the same layout.
Which style to use
| Style | Looks like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Number only | 7 | Reports, essays, books |
| Page n | Page 7 | Manuals and handouts |
| Page n of total | Page 7 of 24 | Contracts, legal and official documents |
| n / total | 7 / 24 | Slides and compact footers |
